A target language is the language you are learning right now. The language you are striving for to improve and finally acquire.
Below, you'll find some points that watching TV shows in your target language can really be crucial for your growth!
1. You see the real language being used.
When you see a tv show, you have contact with slang words, the structure of phrases and how native speakers use it, so your learning process will be faster.
2. The context will help you to learn new words.
You can learn a lot of words by the context of what is happening. In general, the phrases are linked to the actions.
3. You learn different meanings of the words that you never knew before.
In my case, watching greek series, I realised that Îμαθα (I learned) can also be "I found out!"
4. You'll understand everything with time
Maybe when you start to see the show you won't understand anything at all...in a while you notice that you can understand a few words...with time you'll be able to understand everything, but the process takes time...
Don't be sad if you can't understand at the first take. With practise, you train your brain in the language and a little by little you’ll improve not only your listening skills, but also your target language.
5. Tips
-If you are a beginner start with subtitles BUT I recommend that you start with subtitles in your target language! Why? If you put the subtitles on another language, may you don't pay attention to the language you want to speak, and this will make your process slowly.
- when you feel comfortable, turn off the subtitles and start to see without them! I’m sure you can!
- don't say (or think) "I can't understand it" it will ruin your process. Think, instead: "I understood this word!!!" This will give your brain the motivation you need to keep going. Remember: you don't go upstairs all in once, right? Little by little you'll get there!!
- take notes of words or slang words! It will make you remember them later.
-and most important: have fun! Learning a language must be fun and a pleasure thing.
